Ethnographies of sport and social change

Convenors: Davide Sterchele (Leeds Metropolitan University) & Dino Numerato (Loughborough University)

In this session we invite ethnographic contributions that analyse sport as a vehicle and as a mirror of social change. This might include focus on transformation of sporting activities, recent emergence and development of alternative physical activities or protest movements in sport. Drawing on the specific case studies presented in the session, the following questions could be discussed: Do sport and physical activity have specific characteristics that make them particularly suitable as objects for ethnographic research? Which are the benefits and limits of ethnography in understanding the processes of social change (both in general and in/through sport)? How does the ethnographic approach help to investigate/unveil processes and their dynamics, ambivalences and contradictions? What contribution can be made by digital ethnographies in further exploration of these processes?
